Spring 2020 Daytime
January 2020 - MAY 2020
ABOUT THE KITE’S NEST DAYTIME PROGRAM: The Kite's Nest's Daytime Program provides a rigorous, creative, project-based, and wide-ranging curriculum for students ages 8 - 14, three days a week, from 9:30am - 3:00pm. To reduce risk from coronavirus, classes were moved online during the Spring 2020 semester.
SPRING 2020 CLASSES
EN ESPAÑOL
Mondays, 9:30am - 3:00pm | Ages 8 - 14
Arts, games, activities, and field trips… in Spanish! With Ines Chapela and Jen DuBois.
Como se dice...? This class is for students who want to learn and speak Spanish! For any students who took En Español in Spring 2019, this class is a perfect follow-up; new students and all Spanish levels welcome. En Español takes a creative and activity-based approach to teaching language. We’ll go on field trips, engage in arts activities, play games, read, write, sing, and work on personal projects — all in Spanish! Each week we’ll spend the day together playing, laughing, and messing up in a language we’re learning together. [Read more.]
We’ll go on field trips to visit local community spaces and restaurants, learning about various Spanish-speaking cultures and histories around the world. We’ll meet with folks from the Columbia County Sanctuary Movement who are organizing with and for immigrants in our communities, and learn about the issues facing Spanish-speaking people in our own city and county. We’ll play games, watch movies, learn the Spanish words to our favorite songs, create art projects, make media, and perform skits. All en Español!
Throughout all of our games, activities, and trips, we’ll build our vocabulary and grammar, develop basic skills in pronunciation and conversation, increase our ease with conjugating verbs, and practice communicating across languages.
Why learn Spanish? Spanish is the second-most spoken language in the U.S and the primary language in many of our closest neighboring countries. In fact, so many people in the U.S. speak Spanish at home that the U.S. is the country with the 2nd largest population of Spanish speakers in the world. In other words, there are more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than in Spain! Being able to speak and understand Spanish is essential: it means being able to connect and communicate with our neighbors.

EMPIRES & ENTROPY
Tuesdays, 9:30am - 3:00pm | Ages 8 - 14
The rise and fall of empires told through the art of animation. With Zebi Williams and Chelsea Arend.
What do history and stop motion animation have in common? They are both ways of exploring the passage of time. [Read more.]
In this class we’ll examine the rise and fall of ancient empires. De-centering the European narrative of history which often focuses only on “Western Civilization,” we’ll take a truly global view: looking at the ebbing and flowing stories of global powers that often collided with and/or fortified one another. Who was Genghis Khan, and what did the Mongolian Empire look like? What can we learn about the Moors and the spread of Arabic knowledge of math and science across the European peninsula? What can these histories teach us about power, and how can we learn to complicate stories beyond the clashes of heroes and villains? How did the world’s empires and dynasties of the past shape our society today? We’ll use the art of stop motion animation to retell and understand what we’re learning, and to share it with others.

MOBILE CLASSROOM
Thursdays, 9:30am - 3:00pm | Ages 8 - 14
A traveling class for explorers, artists, and storytellers. With Pamela Badila and Heylan Tsumagari.
This class will be part Mobile Classroom (back by popular demand!) and part Publishing Studio. We’ll travel each week as artists and adventurers, and design and make our own creative guidebook to share with the public. [Read more.]
Our mission: There are so many surprising, mysterious, fun and fascinating places to explore as a young person growing up in the Hudson Valley. But how do you find out where they are? If a kid has an interest, where can they go to explore it? And how could places be better designed for kids and youth? Artists and scientists analyze the world around them in similar ways: making observations, collecting, documenting, analyzing, and comparing. Our task this semester is to research, design, create, and publish our own guide and mini-museum for – and by – youth.
Mobile classroom: On some weeks we’ll head out on adventures throughout the Hudson Valley and beyond: visiting museums, community art centers, landmarks, abandoned buildings, and natural spaces. While on our travels, we’ll act as collectors, documenters, photographers, illustrators, and researchers: observing, asking questions, and gathering all the information we need for our project. What’s the most fun, engaging, or weird thing you noticed? What could make this place better?
Art Studio / Publishing House: Back at the nest, we’ll synthesize what we’ve seen, heard, and learned, by making creations of our own. Maybe we’ll create a large pop-up guide book, a scavenger map, or a magazine. Maybe we’ll make a mini-museum or a cabinet of curiosities. Together we’ll dream up, create, write, illustrate, copy, paste, mold, shape, edit, and compile our own adventurer's guide to the Hudson Valley.
